Also, let us know if any of our graduates are serving our country.
Alexis Arra, Class of 2009, a sophomore in the graphic design program at Penn State, has won the Betreff Gentner Prize at the 2015 “Water is Life” International Student Poster Competition in Berlin. There were over 4,800 entries from 81 countries and only five prizes awarded in total. Alexis received a 1,500 Euro prize for her design.
“It is a humbling experience to have been recognized in an international graphic design poster competition as a second-year graphic design student,” remarked Alexis. She explains, “My concept developed as a result of the research of water impact in third world countries, where water is a much more precious and scarce resource. I then compared our treatment of water to those countries’ treatment and found a strikingly apparent difference. The color palette I chose came from traditional African colors representing those who I found in my research that went to extreme lengths just to get clean water.”
Her professor, Fang Chen noted that Alexis “utilized the contrast method to create a strong and sharp poster, which expresses complicated and profound meanings in a simple way.” Chen remarked that he has watched “great strides of improvement in her work and her willingness to learn and grown as a designer.”
Alexis reflected, “This award has definitely made me work even harder to achieve my goal as a designer. I am more confident in my design work and feel that I have the skills I need to develop into the designer I aspire to be.” Congratulations to Alexis and her parents on this achievement!
